I'm trying to figure out why it's taking me so long to read this. It's intensely evocative and visual, but I realize it is difficult to anticipate where the plot may be going--and to be engaged with a character who is already dead. Through the half that I have read so far, the feeling is of being a detached observer, watching the action through a veil. This is not necessarily bad, but it isn't a page-turner either.
