I'm not really liking this watch commander much at all. I'mma need the sheriff to mosey on back into the picture soon. (I kind of figured he's there to provide drama and friction since the sheriff is Joe's friend as well as boss - and a necessary evil, especially give the less dramatic turn of this installment. But still. I don't like him.)

I must have been in a bad mood when I started the last one because Joe's POV/way of speaking isn't bothering me as much this time around.

You know, Nick is probably kicking himself after hearing how Ty basically slept with everyone that showed interest and carried a gun. (If ever there was an admonition to shit or get off the pot it's Nick not putting himself out there in time, right?)

Yeah, as much as I LOVE Sean Crisden, I do have to admit that JF Harding really does a great job nailing the various accents, too. And his narration is how I hear the characters in my head now, so I looking back at my hesitation over a new narrator makes me laugh.

For no other reason than I need a book for the A-Z author challenge and there's no one else in my TBR that has either name starting with an 'X'.

So, that escalated quickly. And yes, of course, the one thing I hate more than anything else - random third person (non-MC) POV. Yay. (Not.)

I'm reading this for the UTC, so it wasn't necessarily something I'd have normally chosen. That said, it's not too bad. Boring, but not too bad.

So, I've already listened to a book this week where a character I didn't like much (wow, understatement) got completely redeemed in a sequel (Jake in Off Campus/Nothing Like Paris). By the end of the second installment I was 100% on board with the guy and his character growth.

Let's see if that luck holds for this series as well. Jim's not an easy character to care about - let alone like very much...

I've only ever listened to Alexis Hall's books and appreciated them for the rich story, the deep characters & how they sounded as a whole; this go 'round I'm gaining a new appreciation for how he uses words and paints such a vivid setting. The prose is like it's own form of poetry...or something. I'm shit at explain this obviously.

tl;dr - This book is beautiful so far and I don't know why I expected differently.

It doesn't happen in many of the books I choose, but usually like it when an audiobook has two narrators. Well, I have a qualifier for that now: they have to sound different enough to make me realize it's two narrators. Otherwise, one narrator would have done just as well. (I read the first one; probably should have gone back and listened to it so I could re-establish the characters in my mind.)

Ugh, how did I forget that Joe's POV has that weird accent & folksy-type way of speaking? It was mildly irritating but slightly amusing for a bit in the first novel...now I just want to claw out my eyes because it's not working out for me on how he's supposed to sound. It's almost like reading a book in a different language & then having to translate it in my head to figure out what he's saying. Audio version, plz.

And OF COURSE I end up rolling into the space assigned to Assassins/Spies for Whips & Kisses...

This was my team's last category for Spellapalooza - that ended today - so I was kind of hoping to avoid the genre for for a while. *sigh*

Holy shit. Why the hell hasn't this been re-worked into a television show? Yeah, the first 90 minutes felt like a massive info dump but editing it for TV would address this. Serious, I'm kinda in awe of how good it's turning out to be. Okay, I'm not fond of the fade-to-black sex scenes but it hasn't detracted from the story & would probably make it easier to sell for network production. Skiffy needs to develop this.

Huh. I'm not sure why I kept putting this off because it's actually quite interesting. I can definitely see the bits other reviewers say remind them of Josh Lanyon's Adrien English books, but I'm not put off by it. (Probably because I'm a huge JL fangirl.)

I do find it a slight bit precious that the mystery appears to be building on stories penned by Edgar Allen Poe - when the author's name is ALSO Poe. *side-eye*
