A deep analysis of Hitchcock's Notorious, arguably the director's greatest film..

Hemingway meets Hitchcock! Another one for the "Hemingway Ubiquitous Cameo" shelf. Was there nowhere this guy went and no one this guy Hemingway met back in the day?

Honestly, I don't think I've enjoyed a Hollywood bio more than this one. Un-putdownable.

The Criterion restoration of 1934's The Man Who Knew Too Much makes all the difference in the movie's watchability. Engaging it right now.

Leiser made the first great feature found-footage documentary about the Nazis, Mein Kampf, in 1960, to great international success. Even after all the ones that have followed, it remains one of the best. This book very clearly surveys the themes of Nazi cinema and the workings of Goebbels' state film efforts. Very good so far.

The psychoanalysis is getting a bit thicker, and I'm choosing to put more trust in the footnoted passages (there are about 600, so he's decent at sourcing) than the un-footnoted ones. Smart, though, to establish patterns and facts repeatedly to at least give weight to his later assertions. I'm a big boy; I can pick the bones out of the soup...

So far, Dickens is a dissing incantatory rapper. I'm quite taken with the tossed-off glib savagery of these opening chapters. It's not subtle, but it's hamfisted in the most elegant way possible. Onward.

Hard to put down. Nothing outlandish is posited. It all seems reasonably extrapolated and backed up.

Although very early into this, it's already the best film biography I've ever read. Spoto has pinpointed in precise detail the early influences that marked Hitchcock's film sensibilities and artistry. This is masterful.

Pretty easygoing read. Walter was a little too close to Mahler to really dig deeply into him, but this is a valuable reminiscence anyway of an enigmatic figure.

Sgt. Pepper's is 50 years old. Kids, especially young girls and women, still love The Beatles. To put this in perspective, when I was a kid in the '70s, no kids were listening to music from the 1920s. Interesting the familiarity and endurance of the one but not the other.

The chapter on the 1920s was very interesting and illuminating, but also a bit rocky. Clearly this was not Haskell's favorite era of movies. Things will definitely perk up with the '30s, as that is her forte.

Morphed from a tasty impressionistic work into a solid piece of historical reportage. So far, the best book I've read by Didion, and that's saying a lot.

Fetching and brilliantly written; at first I feared Didion was just slumming it but now that I'm 6 chapters in I can see she burrows deeply into the cultural complexity of the city. Really interesting to read this after E.B. White's "Here is New York." Excellent bookend works. Onward...
