Bailiff was probably the most direct rebuke of the establishment and serfdom. The "ideal" Russian Noble in Arkady Pavlych that is in fact cruel and pompous. We also have the bailiff that has been abusing his power and enslaved the serfs through paying off their rentThere were aspects of mystery and I thought it was a great short story that could have had been expanded further but it was also brilliant and concise ...

Bezhin Lea was beautiful and sweet. The descriptions of nature were awesome and the superstitious stories of the 5 young boys were cute and interesting. The morning after the descriptions are so immense and the glory of the ending is contrasted so drastically with the tragedy of the next sentence. There is some pondering of class divisions, even amongst the children but the focus is primarily on nature and the boys

Farmer Ovsysnikov. Lots of different stories about the class system all rolled into one. Talks about Turgenevs brutal grandfather, a great kind general, a nobleman who scared his peasants by being too kind. Then we have his nephew who goes round helping farmers challenge the landowners and the story of a French army drummer that is saved by a noble and told to play piano

The district Doctor is heartbreaking. I liked the switch up in prose that mimicked the doctors speech aswell as the franticness of the events. But yeah sad as freak.

These last two stories have seemed to emphasise the often cruel nature of the noble, serf owning class. Even a noble like count Ilych who was considered jovial and friendly by turgenev and one of his old serfs would beat serfs, shave their heads and send them to the army. The inhumanity is also shown by Vas who's son has just died and all he is seen is as a commodity by his master who is only interested in rent

I enjoyed the first story. I like the way Turgenev writes. The descriptions and the characters and I found the first story sweet and funny and I feel like it's a great starting point for the rest of the novel. If they are all like this I'll have a resoundingly pleasant time

Ryujis relationship with the sea is really interesting. The hate he feels and yet the devotion is quite powerful. The sense of loss ss he departs is strong

Noborus view of the world and this perfectionism contrasts reality in which people are flawed and perfection will never be realised.

Fusakos loneliness is powerful. I think the three main characters are wonderfully written

I despise the chief. These kids are disillusioned with society and reality and they're seeking to destroy. They hate everything that they believe doesnt have value. I dont like them

The character of Ryuji is quite similar to that of Raskolnikov, the pride and narcissism that leads to a separation and loneliness. Ryuji is the most interesting character so far

I wrote a review but I deleted it by accident. Its wicked and funny and Holden Craufield is amazingly written. I see myself in him a lot that it's kind of freaky. I've laughed out loud a bunch and gotten sad at other times. Overall going good
