Uh, Yeah I have no clue how to say most of these names!

A detail I’ve never seen addressed is that technically…. The creature should have a French accent.

We have debated what exactly should we call The Creature for centuries. Frankenstein? I’d argue by refusing to let him be called Frankenstein we are only assisting Victor in his choice to abandon The Creature. However! I’d also like to offer up the name ‘Good Spirt’. It is what the blind man’s family consistently called him while he was with them. Of course sadly he didn’t get to remain a good spirit.

I have often read that the image of the creature being a patchwork of body parts is a creation of the ‘31 film not the book. And I would have to disagree. The details are left vague but Victor pretty plainly tells us where he got his materials. “bones from Charnel-houses” and “the dissecting room and the slaughterhouse”. Maybe not as crude as in the movies but the Creature is certainly a patchwork.

I’m always amused how many older books decided to start their stories by telling us the life story of their main characters before the interesting stuff can start. Do we need to know how Victor’s parents met? Probably not, but luckily we get through that pretty quickly.

I picked this up cause it’s considered one of the best Daredevil arcs (and it’s been great) but…. Jesus! What a brutal way to meet this character on the page for the first time.

I’m reading my first edition copy to prep for the new movie and I noticed a little brown smudge on a page just after Grandpa Joe told us all about the wonderful candy Wonka makes, a smudge I think is chocolate.

It’s fun to think that the first kid who owned this (who now would be coming up on 70) just had to put the book down and taste some chocolate after reading about what wonders Willy Wonka could do.

Gotta love Robinson spending so much of this book on a soap box going on about how great a Christian he is and how the island freed him of materialism, only for him to spend the end of the book explaining in extreme details all the money he made off his plantation while he was away and how he went about getting that money.
