Bergson is such a goon, reconciling idealism and materialism! Silly guy!

The sauce!!!

Bergson is one of my favorite philosophers to read. In terms of pulling claims and concepts out of his books, Bergson is one of the least obtuse writers in all of Philosophy. Frankly, I don’t know if he could afford to write like Hegel and still be taken seriously. His works are DENSE with ideas and concepts but he really wants you to understand. This is my second stab at this book, it is so difficult but riveting

My body, an object destined to move other objects, is, then, a center of action; it cannot give birth to a representation. Bergson finds that our bodies (to include our brain), do not create the world around us, but instead exists with that world.

Tough read so far but seems very on point.

Bergson, un filósofo vitalista que nos invita a pensar sobre la relación del recuerdo, la memoria, la imagen, el cuerpo. Muy recomendable, aunque a veces es difícil seguirle; pero incluso así la recompensa es, creo, gigantesca!

Drawing on Aristotle and the descriptions of the body this book outlines memory as it relates to the body and matter.

Perceptie = (onderdeel van) beelden
Affectie = de noodzakelijke modificatie van het centrale beeld (i.e. het lichaam), door beelden

"To perceive all the influences from all the points of all bodies would be to descend to the condition of a material object. Conscious perception signifies choice, and consciousness mainly consists in this practical discernment. The diverse perceptions of the same object, given by
my different senses, will not, then, when put together, reconstruct the complete image of the object;

Kortom: inkomende vibraties -> beelden -> uitgaande bewegingen. Hoe meer beelden, hoe meer mogelijke bewegingen, hoe onbepaalder mijn wil is.

Dit is een gradueel proces. Simpele organismen zijn automaten (stimulus-respons), mensen zijn automaten in zoverre ze onbewuste reflexen uitoefenen, waarnemende wezens in zoverre ze hun wil bepalen door beelden.

Perceptie is dus functioneel, in dat het ons laat handelen.

Mijn perceptie van beelden valt dus een op een samen met materiële bewegingen - in de wereld, in mijn lichaam, en in mijn hersenen.

Beide zijn corresponderen, want zijn een functie van onbepaaldheid van mijn wil.

Hoe meer mijn wil bepaald is, in lichaamshandelingen, hoe minder ik waarneem, en vice versa.

Lichtgevend punt P, wiens stralen op punten a,b,c van netvlies belanden.

1. Wetenschap lokaliseert vibraties van een zekere amplitude en duur op punt P.
2. Bewustzijn neemt licht waar op punt P.

Bergson: geen wezenlijk verschil tussen (1) en (2), gegeven dat we aan materiële beweging de (a) ondeelbaarheid, (b) eenheid en (c) kwalitatieve heterogeniteit toekennen die door de mechanica aan beweging wordt ontnomen.

Idealisme: materie is een perceptie (representatie).
Realisme: materie is een ding.

Bergson: beide posities gaan te ver. Materie is een verzameling beelden. Een bestaan dus tussen een representatie en een ding - een zelf-bestaand beeld.

Kortom: we vergeten de dissociatie tussen existentie en verschijning. Voor Bergson is verschijning de existentie - een tussenpositie tussen Descartes en Berkeley.

Geheugen als mechanisme.

De buitenwereld bestaat uit statische frames, en bestaat dus enkel instantaan. Hier en nu. Maar de duur van ons innerlijke bewustzijn, legt al deze momenten in een (oneindige) reeks neer in ons geheugen. Het 'hier en nu' wordt dan het (tot op heden) laatste punt in een continue reeks punten.

Geheugen dus als beginsel van de buitenwereld.

Innerlijk bewustzijn: duur, kwalitatief, dynamisch, meervoudigheid
Materiële buitenwereld: ruimte, kwantitatief, statisch, eenvoudigheid

De film-analogie. De buitenwereld bestaat uit statische toestanden, frames, terwijl de binnenwereld bestaat uit dynamische processen. Continuïteit en beweeglijkheid worden door het bewustzijn op de buitenwereld geprojecteerd: vloeiende bewegingen van materie.
