The writing is so good here. The men are hideous indeed. I hate them. They make it hard to like the author as well. It is so hard to be and to write a character who is both tragic and hateful. Well done.

You know how people do shitty things, acknowledge the shitiness, and then expect that by owning their bad behavior (but not fixing their mess) they become the good guy? This is that. Brilliantly written though. This is also a veritable catalogue of effluvia. So much pus, feces, diarrhea, urine, sweat, flatulence, ejaculate, vomit, etc.

Like spending a day with a very smart overtherapized 12-year-old.

I love DFW's writing, but I always forget how he makes me hate men. All men. I know that is not fair, but I can't imagine anyone (including men) coming away from his fiction not hating men. I kept thinking of my discussion here with the brilliant Robin about her distaste for Philip Roth based on his obsession with his dick. Robin, if you see this, I implore you to never read DFW.
