Not to say that nonfiction books can’t contain humour, but there’s a difference between humour and mocking your own book topic.

“It’s all deeply uninteresting.”
Not a fan of the author telling me that the historical context of Roman society and politics is uninteresting in a book about Roman society and politics. I get that she’s trying to sound relatable, but I’d rather just she gives the info without snide comments.

The material is interesting, the writing style.. even more so. Took me a while to vibe with it because it's reads as so deeply unserious about pretty heavy subject matter. I feel like this book is for the true crime girlies because she writes so casually about horrific situations. Really reminds me of those sort of podcasts. I'm not loving it but the source material is interesting enough to keep reading for now.
