Very obscure, I didn’t expect the outcome of the Murders in the Rue Morgue story. I liked the writing style but hoped for more gothic descriptions and conclusions. 3.5/5

"Marie Roget" Poe and I have a lot in common: we're both exactingly logical thinkers who want more than anything else to be Romantic artists and to lose ourselves in the vagaries of dream-like tales and verse. This story is what happens when we write a text unable to reconcile in any way the two two opposing forces of logic and imaginative narrative: it's all rather tedious, if still fascinating.

The first ever detective mystery story is still the best. Funny to read poor old destitute Poe making Conan Doyle's fortune for him by inventing Holmes and Watson. (Sorry, but post-Brexit my Anglophile status is rather taxed--also two of my ancestors fought in wars against Great Britain.) So chalk one (a really big one literary-speaking) up for the USA!

I’m not impressed. I typically love Poe, which is why I chose this book but I’m 3/4 of the way through and so entirely bored. Much of the story seems to ramble and repeat itself. For being a detective story, the delivery doesn’t seem so great either. It’s not suspenseful or surprising. I don’t even want to finish it but I’m this far already so I might as well.
