This is a fun fantasy with music and family at its core. On the whole it seems slight compared to some of DWJ's other novels with a thinner story but she makes up for it when you realize the scope of the world building and that this story is laying the groundwork for a quartet that will be epic in scope and span centuries. Excited to (re)read the next one soon!

It's interesting reading this now when I'm more familiar with DWJ as an author. I can see now the pieces that would be come Howl's Moving Castle and Fire and Hemlock and even the Chrestomanci books. The pieces are all here in one form or another.
