🌷 . pre-read 𓂃
I first read this book 5 years ago when it came out and loved it. Though it's middle grade, Colfer's writing is exceptional. I was completely immersed and binge-read it! Now, in a reading slump, I’m revisiting books I know I enjoy. If you haven't read it, I STRONGLY recommend it. the writing isn’t too juvenile either—it’s more like borderline YA!

A 9 year old little boy would not be talking like this, nor would he be so proper with his wording given the context of the story. This whole book is unbelievable and quite contradictory. Context doesn’t add up, nor do the conversations and time periods.

A boy talks about killing himself (how is this a children's book??), whole beginning of book feels like harry potter where he's living in this horrible house (but in this book it's like an eye roll, definitely trying to play to harry potter), and Madame Weatherberry is still treating this in an annoying liberal way of trying to explain "magic" (gayness; i'm liberal and i'm annoyed haha); frustrating and annoying

reminds me of assassin's blade - sarah j. maas.
so much unnecessary harshness in the story line, annoying optimism and easily moving on from disturbing storylines. making it seem like the labor camp and leaving those girls behind isn't a big deal, women reading literature or talking back to men, let alone brothers is infuriating. again, the poor poor mother. i feel so bad for her. too much preaching in politics!

this is NOT a children's book. This is so harsh and upsetting. telling your own daughter you would rather see her get executed, a labor camp for girls ages 8-19, starvation, dunking girls in a well as punishment, reminds me of KKK, talks about whippings, etc. horrible book, i would never give any child this to read. such horrible language and circumstances. the poor mother, horrible men, just a horrible heinous life.

This is a really good book. Brystal’s story is very captivating.
Finding out brystal was magic was insane & getting caught was whoahhhhhh + her dad ouccchh.. her brothers tho - so sad. They was played against each other pg 119
I don’t enjoy the blood pact mention, seems inappropriate for a juvenile book 🥴

Opinion🛍️⚡️🪴🏝️🎧
To be honest Rosette in chapter 18 is kinda annoying to be honest, she was like “OMG VISITORS” and didn’t see so much interest in her aunt either, Tho I did feel bad for her when Lucy talked behind her back it was kind mean. But anyways I didn’t see so much interest in this chapter.

My opinion on chapter 15
I think chapter fifteen was one of the chapters where they slowly find out secrets
Of Madame Weatherberry, like what’s her real name, where she actually is and if she is visiting a sick friend or not. One thing I don’t like is the fact that Lucy is kinda of a bad girl, cuz breaking into madam weatherberry’s office is kinda much. But amazing chapter❤️

I’m currently on chapter 10 and to be honest, I feel bad for Lucy. She was literally abandoned by her parents, and the worst part it was her birthday. But I also think she deserves this, cuz she insulted skyline and tangerina. So yeah

I HATE CHAPTER 5. I feel so bad for brystal, that she had to go to a facility away from her parents, AND THR FACT THAT HER FATHER SAID” you’re no daughter of mine” IT JUST MAKES ME WANNA CRY(but I didn’t I just felt sad on the inside) but the book is AMAZING✨

So far the book is good just finished the prologue and I’m FINALLY ON CHAPTER ONE. The only problem I have with this book is that the chapters are very long like I’ve wanted to yell “GO FASTER PAGES, GO FASTER!!”.
