Treating political parties like sports teams is detrimental to our growth as a society. It lacks critical thought on the policies and candidates themselves and, instead, creates camps that alllow people to vote because they represent a group vs a belief we can support

“Prioritize being kind over being right” they drop banger after banger in this book. I mean the whole chapter about becoming comfortable with being uncomfortable is so good especially as im going off to college. This is a chapter I for sure wanna reread in the future. It makes so many good points not only on how to think about politics but on how to think about life.

“We mean celebrating our fellow Americans rather than dismissing each other based on party labels, policy positions, and voting records. We mean recognizing the unproven, unverifiable worthiness in every person we encounter. We mean seeing each person as enough, whether or not we agree with them” The books definition of grace, PERFECT

So excited to continue learning from Sarah and Beth, the podcasters from Pantsuit Politics, two friends who are Christians and have historically voted differently.

I started this book in 2021 and as I never finished it, I am resuming it now. The timing feels only right.

Very enjoyable. I appreciate their approach to hot topics, discussing how traditional discussions force you into one of two sides, and how they see more than that, talking about why they believe what they do and finding common ground. They also discuss the dangers of being on teams, republican vs democrat, and how you get group mindset and blindly think something because that’s your teams opinion.

They keep referring to political parties as sports teams and advising that people “take their jerseys off” which is a good analogy. Stop believe something is right or wrong because your team says so, have conversations about what actually matters to you and reflects your values, not what your teams says you should stand for.

Interesting listen so far. They touched on the “strong dislike” that’s developed between parties. Something like 20 years ago, a teen percentage (17?) of republicans and democrats “strongly disliked” members of the other party, and in the past election or two that number has reached almost 50% on both sides! They discuss blindly agreeing with your party’s platform when you haven’t actually looked at it

I wish EVERYONE would read this book!!! We should all learn to engage in and value honest, real, open-minded civil discourse around hard topics. We need to “take off the jerseys” of our chosen political teams and look at the history and facts of policy discussions.

It is quickly becoming apparent as I listen to this audiobook that I need to purchase a physical copy. These women have such great ideas and perspectives and now more than ever we need to be having these conversations.
