Can we get along? We need to find a way. What the authors are trying to tell us is yes.

DNF. Listened to the first half on audio and didn't get all the way through before I had to return it. I probably would have finished it with more time - I think some good points were made about listening across the aisle. However, I didn't feel compelled to get back on the hold list to finish it, at least not right now.

Staying conscious online means that we don’t type things we wouldn’t say with our voices to another person seated across from us at the dinner table.

We grow when our ideas about policy and problems are challenged. We become better thinkers, more articulate speakers, and more earnest listeners through the daily discomfort of engaging with other people about difficult subjects. Conflict is healthy. Conflict is necessary. Without conflict we stay in a state of comfortable arrested development.

We also can’t have productive dialogue with others without getting curious about what stakes color the other person’s perspective. Our stakes aren’t always logical, coherent, or rational, and that’s okay. The same holds true for other people. We don’t need to discount a person’s perspective because of what’s influencing it; we just need to acknowledge what’s influencing it.

When we believe the power to either fix or destroy everything lies in our politics, it becomes increasingly important to label people who disagree with us as enemies and to ensure that our thoughts prevail. We don’t want to talk about politics, especially with people who disagree with us, because we’ve decided our politics define us and everything around us.

Participating in the political process is a spiritual imperative, but we should participate as an expression of our faith, not as a fulfillment of our faith. In other words, faith or values should inform rather than define our votes, opinions, and ways of talking with our neighbors about the future of the country.

So far the authors have made a good case for having adult conversations with people who don't have the same political views with the aim of understanding the "why" behind core values.

So far, the authors have made a great case on the value of having open adult conversations with people who don't necessarily have the same political views with the aim of understanding each other's "why" before tackling political policy.

The book is one drawn out tautology. “We should listen to each other more instead of arguing...because it’s important to listen to each other more.” “Politics shouldn’t be the end-all, be-all...because politics isn’t the end-all be-all.” “Not everything is black and white...because some things aren’t black and white”

Not a lot of actionable advice. The type of person this book would serve well would unfortunately not actively seek it out.

Mostly platitudes that, if you’re the type of person interested in a book like this in the first place, you don’t need to hear again.

Still, it’s a short and easy enough read with some interesting takeaways and anecdotes

For as much as I love the podcast I kind of lukewarm about the book so far. It’s a good primer for my rising 5th grader though.

This book should be MANDATORY for every American to read, to learn how to have a political conversations without trying to win the battle against the other side. It’s about learning to step into the shoes of others and trying to understand why and how they might feel about a topic to broaden your thinking about highly charged political issues, without loosing your mind!
