Quite interesting characters! I feel for their life in poverty, and I am curious to see how they get out of their slump.

Orwell’s writing is brilliant but he must have had a miserable life.

"No born Londoner ... now says 'bloody', unless he is a man of some education. The word has, in fact, moved up the social scale and ceased to be a swear word for ... the working classes. The current London adjective, now tacked onto every noun, is 'fucking'. No doubt in time 'fucking' like 'bloody'. will find its way into the drawing-room and be replaced by some other word." - likewise 'cunt'?

I’m rereading this. I read it in high school and was one of the books that made me want to become a chef (weirdly) I love that I’m in my reread era, or at least one or two a year.

A few comments:
- I was basically a plongeur at basil
- glad to have been introduced to ‘Saint Eloise’ - very fitting considering my eloise is pretty saintlike
- I think I should start donating to charity

'[Bozo] had managed to keep his brain intact and alert, and so nothing could make him succumb to poverty. He might be ragged and cold, or even starving, but so long as he could read, think and watch for meteors, he was, as he said, free in his own mind.'

'My new clothes had put me instantly into a new world. Everyone's demeanour seemed to have changed abruptly. Clothes are powerful things. Dressed in a tramp's clothes it is very difficult, at any rate for the first day, not to feel that you are genuinely degraded. You might feel the same shame, irrational but very real, your first night in prison'
