I really liked the blood of stars duology so I hope I like this too :)

How... how did Shang fall down the well but was also on top of the well?

I bought this a couple years ago for 99 cents but now when I'm finally starting it I'm not sure I love it that much, and I'm only a little ways in. The writing style is kind of boring.

I don't know if Elizabeth Lim is a good writer or if she's just miles better than Liz Braswell...

Im not very far yet but I grew up loving mulan and i love this twist so far

much like the movie, shang spends most of this book coming across as a gay disaster in love with his friend ping

I thought I cared enough about Mulan to read this. But I don’t. DNF - I tried but the story didn’t get me like I wanted it to, the writing too elementary for me, characters still remind me of the film but just not enough uhmp to keep me engaged.

Guess where gonna through all the levels huh?

Probably would make a good screen adaptation.

Reads very elementary. Like something I would have read when I was in elementary/middle school or just starting out HS. I’ll probably DNF it bc I could care less about the story line, it’s not as intriguing as I thought it’ll be. Still going to keep the book though bc Mulan is one of my favorite Disney princess

As much as I love Mulan’s character, the fact that she’d go to hell (literally) for the captain at that point of the story feels out of character to me. Yes, she feels guilty; he died because of her; but that doesn’t seem right.
Plus, she left without her friends and protector and that’s unforgivable. 😤

So they fight the fire demon, and it was really messy. I ccouldn't really tell what was happening and had to go back and re-read sections to figure out if the demon was flying, or falling, or crawling, never mind the strange geography of volcanoes and cauldrons and rivers and waterfalls. Then we go the the hall of mirrors, and this section is fantastic. Mulan has to look in her reflection and figure out who she sees

So far the book is kinda flat to me. I’m almost tempted to DNF it but I want to give it an opportunity to kick up, so hopefully it does.

Mulan is one of my favorite Disney movies so I’m hoping this gets better.

So we have the reveal. Ping is Mulan. Shang takes it well, not. She ends up trapped by Po again, which is a little strange, but Shang rescues her. They are now fighting the Balrog, but the action is very confusing as there is a volcano, a cauldron, a river and a pillar.

So we get more of Mulan and Shang's relationship, and the fact she is lying about who she is. Some ancestors make an appearance and whip them up to the 97th floor. They don't trust her either and her lies are starting to crumble around her. Also, ShiShi is back, after "dieing" for twenty pages.

So far surprisingly good and angsty. I’m honestly shook.

Mulan and the gang escape from the lady of forgetfulness, which is different from the tower where you forget everything. They are now climbing a mountain of knives, and mulan is avoiding getting slashed by using...knives?

So Mulan gets Shang from the tower of the last glance. She manages to convince him, more difficult than expected, and then they fall into a well, but get out of it so quickly I don't know the point (other than to show that Mulan can look after herself)

Mulan has entered the underworld, and made a deal with King Yama. Find Shang or stay in Diyu forever. We already had stakes, find him or he dies, so this doesn't really add much spice to it. We are stuck in a bamboo forest until Mulan finds a way out that doesn't really make sense. Shang's father is there to tell them where Shang is.

So Mulan has gone to the underworld, leaving everyone behind. We are now with Shishi the guardian of the Li family. Is the rest of this going to have anything to do with Mulan?
