Excellent, gritty, pitch-black coming-of-age story that reminded me in all the best ways of Cormac McCarthy’s “Blood Meridian” and John Hillcoat’s masterpiece “The Proposition,” with a little “True Grit” thrown in to take the edge off a bit. Great dialogue, beautiful prose, and an intense plot that refuses to show mercy until ends on a surprisingly tender and dare I see even hopeful note.
