The ramblings of a man who loves the slip box method of studying. I wish it were more practical.

I am slowly progressing with this book, each chapter is an inspiration, but its hard for me to read more than chapter at the time, as sentences are very complex, and a lot of new words to learn.

Latticework of permanent notes connected in some ways is basis of slip box that helps generate connected sentences as a draft to a full paper later

The three kinds of notes to save my work life
1. Temporary notes taken during the day
2. Project specific notes for the project
3. Long term permanent notes for general things at work eg. always get clarity on current spend, contract terms, autorenewal etc

I think what’s contributing most to my anxiety around work tasks is the fact that I think I have to do everything now.

As opposed to noting it all in one place in a GTD manner

Because I’m currently learning new things on my procurement job such as remembering to think about contract termination clauses, length, etc

The framework of organizing the notes you collect in your mind bank in a systematic way is useful


Stretching brain definitely hurts and makes me want to quit until I go take a walk and then hear things like this book! Thank god for libraries!!

Pretty cool so far - I think the title can be slightly misleading if you’re looking for a how to take better notes guide it covers that but its really more of a framework for creating an external system that houses ideas and thoughts in an organized way. Author makes some pretty good arguments for why that’s important.

“A good structure is something you can trust. It relieves you from the burden of remembering and keeping track of everything” (p. 5)

“A good structure enables flow, the state in which you get so completely immersed in your work that you lose track of time and can just keep on going as the work becomes effortless.” (p. 5)

Nonage (immaturity) is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack o funderstand but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind wihtout another's guidance.

2. reference management system (Zotero)
3. the slip box (obsidian)
4. an editor

steps to writing:

1. make fleeting notes.
2. make literature notes
3. make permanent notes
4. add permanent notes to the slip box

Niklas Luhmann's Slip-box technique

Luhmann stored information in two slip boxes - one for bibliographical information and the other for main information.

The bibliographical one contained references to ideas kept in the main box to trace back origins and explore related ideas.

The separation of the main slip box allowed full focus on the ideas without getting lost in the organization.

Dunning-Kruger effect - amateurs are more likely to overestimate their abilities than the experts. Poor students lack insight into their own limitations - as they would have to know about the vast amoung of knowledge out there to be able to see how little they know in comparison.

Instead of using your willpower to do what you want to do, focus on creating an environment that naturally nudges you to do that without the use of willpower....willpower is scarce.

This is the second time I read but it’s different because this time I’m doing an active reading
