I had never been so poor in my life, and yet here I was, the very picture of an eligible young gentleman. I would marry myself if I could.

The pace has picked up and the plot has become more interesting. Might stick with it after all.

This is taking its time to grab me; so far I'm not enjoying it anywhere near as much as I'd expected to. Let's see if that changes further in.

When the reading doldrums hit, read a great historical fiction book! My new motto. So far, this one is fantastic

It's a good, rollicking historical story--accurate on the detail and although none of the characters really establish themselves as much more than cyphers the pace is such that that doesn't really matter.

I liked the limited time to solve the mystery and did figure out the culprits but the ride was nice

I did not expect this book to move so fast, but it really does. Interesting plot, totally baffled where it might lead. Very into it.

Loving this gritty story! Can't believe I have to leave it behind before my trip as it is a hardback and signed by author...
The atmosphere in this book is unbelievably thick. I can smell London and all her grimy inhabitants. I think her untried protagonist is going to become The Devil in The Marshalsea.

I'm loving this story! It's like Law & Order circa the 1700s.

This was very good. A very realistic portrait of life (and mostly death) in the Marshalsea in the 1700s. Very scary.
I am sad that the author decided to kill a wonderful character that I was looking forward to meet again in the next 10 books or so. Oh well... Very recommended.

‘A proper education. History, natural philosophy, languages. Trade. He’s promised that when we’re done there won’t be a single man in England who’ll marry me.’

So far, extra cookie points to the author for mentioning some book titled Venus in the Convent as part of her research for 1700s vocabulary :D
