The author writes a long, repetitive introduction about how this is the most important story ever be told. He seems to believe it somehow. It continues to be repetitive so far. There is a bunch I didn't know about baseball in the war years, though.

Hank is playing, but poorly
Japan is digging in but seems weaker
Other top ballplayers are rumored to be heading back soon, and so Pete Gray's days in the sun may be numbered.
Happy Chandler is the new commish of mlb, but the owners hate him. Is Ford Frick's time right around the corner?
Also, the integration of the sport is coming, and that right soon, and long overdue as well.

Landis has died, and FDR is extremely ill. The outlook for baseball is dim thanks to a white house big wig and the war is showing no signs of nearing the end. Japan is tougher than expected and the Germans keep coming.
Fascinating book with tons of information and tons of riveting stories sprinkled throughout.

So much history, information, and love of all topics involving baseball, and aviation in the second world war.
This book inspires me to read more and immerse in baseball and the life of Hank Greenberg and Pete Gray.

Started with such promise with some excellently told yarns. But devolved with incoherent structure and way too many cringe-inducing phrase-turns.

Excellent coverage of how baseball was in a precarious situation as the U.S. entered WWII. Fortunately FDR was a big baseball fan and gave the " Green Light" to continue but as the manpower demands for the military continued to surge, big league rosters were depleted. This affected the high profile stars such as Greenberg, Feller, etc. but also minor league players who stepped in to replace them.
