Great! Enjoying the Four Tendencies chapter. Very... complex subject about human behavior.

Habits make change happen by removing willpower from the equation. It’s efficient because the willpower and self-control are focused on the habit change.

“I don’t believe in self-help books,” she said, after reading a self-help book for an hour, raving about that book to a friend, and furiously taking notes about the book in her phone.

Gretchen is more self-aggrandizing in this book than on the podcast which is bugging me (re 4 tendencies - "I wasn't making up a system; I was uncovering a law of nature"!), but I am enjoying the content and finding it applicable. I'm not reading at the pace I want to be reading at the moment so it feels like it's dragging, going to swap to audiobook and power through.

Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to introduce my sister, who can find the loopholes in everything:
Me: Oh this is good. Listen: 'What I do every day matters more than what I do once in a while'
My sister: Unless what you do once in a while is get thoroughly drunk and take your car for a spin. Then what you do every day doesn't matter.
Me: *giggles*
MS: Or if you're a serial killer. Same thing.

I like it a lot so far. The author has a neurotypical brain and so the book is informed by that. Despite not quite understanding all the nuances of brain change, I appreciate her POV very much.

"Although people often assume that cravings intensify over time, research shows that with active distraction, urges--even strong urges--usually subside within 15 minutes. So now whenever I'm tempted to break a good habit (or indulge in a bad habit, two sides of the same coin), I say to myself, "I can leave my desk--in fifteen minutes.""

So far so good. After finishing the self-knowledge part, I got the feeling that I understand myself and people around a bit more.

Struggling, maybe ironically, to push through this one, maybe due to the fact that I've fallen out of my reading habit or that I don't like the way the author writes her observations as if they're fact or how she inserts herself into others' lives to "fix them." Sheesh. Also, how is there a list of "suggested reading" in the back but no credit to other authors or studies throughout. Plagarism, much?

I finished the "Pillars of Habits" section.
1) Monitoring
2) Foundation
3) Scheduling
4) Accountability
Now I am moving on to "The Best Time to Begin". I will review highlighted areas of "Pillar of Habits" before I move on to this section, though.

This book started off on a good foot. Somehow, someway it seems as if she talked in circles. I can say that it was insightful and I look forward to actually completing the book. For now, it’s going back on the shelf.

I really wanted to like this book but I found it almost impossible just when I thought I was getting into it the author made some remark that got under my skin and made her out to be better than everyone who wasn't an "upholder" or that her beliefs are correct and everyone else has no idea what they are on about. Only finished this book because I was so far in I didn't want to abandon it.
