DNF - starting to think I just don't like retellings. Really wasn't adding much to Melville's novel... But at least it wasn't including the whale encyclopaedia bits.

Not worth the two hours I took to make sure I was giving it a fair chance

'Like seaweed gradually soaking into the brine, I fell asleep again."
This book is written without any care for historical accuracy. The pronoun "I" appears in every second sentence and every sentence is short. Minimal description. Vocabulary lifted carelessly from 2020s - 'products' instead of 'merchandise' for example. Flashbacks to account for things that should actually have been mentioned earlier. Just bad

The writing is very easy to follow, I'm not getting the same metaphorical prose as I did in Melville's (years ago I may be remembering wrong), but im intrigued by the gender-swap and how that will add to the tale

"Shoot this sun like an albatross I am tortured yet the sunset soothes me then I need no more brightness yet the cooling dusk blinds the sharp steel of my nail and my crown and I hear the great leviathan whispering in the distance and calling out a song to my nailed bones the song wings its way across cavernous depths "
