Finished The Gilded Age and just ugh at Philip and Ruth. They both work hard and sacrifice to improve their lives and others’. He’s rewarded for his stubborn persistence by getting rich and becoming respectable. She, because she dares to do “men’s work,” is rewarded with a near-fatal illness. Again, ugh.

Currently slogging through The Gilded Age. It reads like Twain started off with a family of characters, then partway through, got bored with them and relegated them to side characters while moving on to another bunch.

I have to say the punctuation in this collection is a mess.

BUT I’m determined to read the whole thing!
