Reading this novella (Passing) for our campus Ethic Studies book group. Have seen the movie before, directed by biracial actress Rebecca Hall, which was quite good!

To America, where Negroes were not people. To America, where Negroes were allowed to be beggars only, of life, of happiness, of security. To America, where everything had been taken from those dark ones, liberty, respect, even the labor of their hands. To America, where, if one had Negro blood, one mustn't expect money, education, or, sometimes, even work whereby one might earn bread.

And, by the way, I wouldn't mention that my people are white, if I were you. Colored people won't understand it, and after all it's your business. When you've lived as long as I have, you'll know that what others don't know can't hurt you.
Loving the writing so far. Helga is a very relatable protagonist to me. Great way to kick off my Black History Month reading!
