Middle school must have been a turning point for Eric Gansworth, bc you can't make this stuff up. I laughed and teared up a bit, if that's a recommendation. Uncle Albert is my favorite character, great contrast to George's father, who is also cool; two different takes on "military dad". Maybe, someday, I will consider listening to the Beatles...

I don't usually read YA books, but this one struck my curiosity when I read about it on a newspaper website. I lived and worked not far from the Tuscarora reservation for several years, so I saw a lot of the racism and "otherness" that the book addresses. It's interesting to hear the other side. Still pretty early in the book, but the simple, personal story is keeping my interest so far.

In some ways this book is about growing up as an American Indian. In other ways it's about growing up in poverty. I have never lived in poverty like this but the shame the main character feels for his home makes me teary.

Enjoying this. Hate that it's an adobe edition so I can only read a little and I didn't get to review it before the date. (Adobe editions grrr). But the book is quite good.

I just realized how unfair and problematic it is that I'm mentally wanting to compare this to Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian. Here's the thing, there is plenty of room for books about Native Americans in literature. So there are 2 that take place on reservations. How many books take place in suburbs? The comparison might be inevitable but that's probably a reminder how few of these type books there are

I want to read this mainly because I love Absolutely True Diary and I hope it's not a rip off. Also I hate that this pub only sends Adobe Digital Editions.
