I thought I was gonna finish it but I got sidetracked and now I'm out of time. I was loving it but now I'm mostly just liking it but, it was still a good read, a worthwhile buy considering it cost me $5 and I am interested in seeing the movie. (if only for the crazy incredible cast).

To me, this reads more like a movie that was written into a book. I know the truth is the opposite. The digressions are a little long winded but I'm enjoying it enough anyway.

Loving the dark humor and palpable tension. Some reviewers felt that the author was trying too hard to be funny but, I think it's a decent balance of self-aware reflection and self-loathing mixed with off the rails digression.

I think I'm enjoying it because I can picture Jason Bateman narrating the story in my head. I haven't seen the movie but I probably will make a point to watch it after I finish the book.

This book is so refreshing at times because it portrays a family that is completely dysfunctional, but also a family that will always have each other's back (roughly). It also enhances the reader to feel so many emotions sometimes it's completely unbearable. Great read!

Childhood seems so permanent.....then one day it's over, and you're shoveling dirt onto your father's coffin, stunned at the impermanence of everything.

We knew marriage would be difficult in the same way that we knew there were starving children in Africa. It was a tragic fact but worlds away from our reality. We were going to be different. Same can be said about parenthood.

I so recommend this book! It is so hilarious and entertaining how one family can be so twisted and dirfted apart.

I love his style of writing so far. Fave quote of chapter 3 "We knew marriage could be difficult in the same way that we knew there were starving children in Africa."

"Is that the Man Up guy in there?
"That's him," I say.
"Which one of y'all hit him?"
"Nobody hit him, he just fell," Phillip says.
The guard smiles widely and extends his hand. "Shake my hand, man. I hate that loudmouth motherfucker."
Phillip shrugs and shakes his hand. "And if you hadn't pulled me off of him when you did,I'd have really kicked his ass."

In my family, we don't so much air our grievances as wallow in them. Anger and resentment are cumulative. "

Holy cow. Well. I totally called the Alice thing. The scene setting up the Hebrew school event is funny & we finally understand the Rottweiler, Paul, Judd issues. The things Judd sabotages are funny. Horry is heartbreakingly real to me.
