The Herald comes with orders to give Eteocles a proper, ceremonious funeral while ordering Polyneices' body to be thrown to the dogs. Antigone defies this order, claiming that she will bury Polyneices herself. The herald warns her not the disobey the orders or will of the citizens. The chorus divides itself in mourning the brothers, one half following Antigone, the citizens.

The sixth soldier, Amphiaraus, is said to be wise and doubtful of Polyneices' seige. Eteocles dismisses him, realizing that good men who join with bad men die like those bad men. The very last soldier, standing at the seventh gate, is Polyneices, his brother. Despite the cries of the chorus, Eteocles takes him on. They kill each other, lamenting ensues. Antigone and Ismene arrive to mourn them.

Here Polyneices's seven are introduced. They are all arrogant and boastful, even to the point of defying the gods, denying their power and will.
