Tragedy all over the place! This is a very sad book. The author wants to show how following tradition and superstitions blindly can lead to great misery.

Oh no, what are his parents up to? First, we got her sad story of her parents and now his parents are going to start a tragedy. Very sad book.

It's well written and compared to Layar Terkembang, the author takes liberties to jump through the timeline and give us bits and pieces of the story, instead of in a chronological manner. I like that. His thoughts on marriage, tradition, prostitution, divorce must've been shocking at that time. Interesting, but controversial. This was released 1920. A hundred years ago. Indonesia didn't even exist yet.

The main characters are Mariamin and Aminuddin. They are Batak Muslim living in the a village called Sipirok. This was published in 1920! The synopsis sounds like a Romeo and Juliet type of story. He tells her that he needs to live the village to find work in the big city so that he can earn money and then return to marry her. And she doesn't like it one bit!
