Dead Giveaway by Simon Brett
Verity’s first review of the year

This time Charles is investigating a death on a game show that he was taking part in (as part of a question not as a contestant or celebrity!) and is back in the world behind the scenes in TV. Clever and funny, I rattled through and went straight on to the next.

Much darker than I had expected and with less actual detection. I found this quite hard to get into and then ultimately quite depressing. I love Golden Age mysteries - and I love a lot of newer mysteries set in that period but this is strangely unsatisfying. A lot of these books deal with darker subjects - but this is really quite bleak and feels more modern than its setting. I've read and enjoyed later books in this series and liked them a lot ...more
