One thing that I am thankful for is that I do not inhabit the shadowed underworld that Selby paints in Requiem. The barren apartments, evasive conversations, littered streets, and meaningless lives. Although billed as a satire of gay life (and a laundry list of sex) in truth it reads as a love story based on Kramer's real life relationship as his avatar, Fred, pursues a more meaningful relationship with Dink in the hedonistic zoo of a vintage gay NYC. Included in this epic is a specific brand of Yiddish humor, which you will enjoy or won't. The novel has moments, and Fred's consistently interrupted quest for love is a worthy journey. ...more
