Sixty years ago, back in 1959, I read my first book, Treasure Island. Actually, my mother read it with me. I was seven and in the third grade. It was around Halloween because I went to a costume party dressed as Long John Silver. I’m not sure, but my faulty memory tells me I picked Treasure Island to read because I had seen the 1934 movie version on television, the one with Wallace Beery as Long John Silver. A collection of 13 interrelated short stories that has a feel of an experimental novel. In the seventh story, a has-been rockstar says, "Time is a goon." From that, I assume the book is about how time beats up people. Egan's prose is beautiful, and A Visit from the Goon Squad is considered one of the best novels of the 2010s.
