really liked it
I would have given this book 5 stars, and was ready to right up until the last page. Even though the main character, Delia, kept shifting in my mind from an old lady to a young girl, the interesting plot and the peripheral characters kept me reading. I honestly had a hard time putting it down. Which is why the ending was disappointing. This is my favorite Simon Winchester book to date. If you love words, stories of monumental achievements against all odds, and quirky characters, this is your book. Winchester is in fine form and clearly loves his topic, delivering a narrative that is difficult to put down in spite of the plethora of facts, almost mind-boggling research, and thorough attention to detail.
