it was ok

After a series of instances that make the main character think he is having lapses in memory, he starts to wonder if someone isn’t messing with him instead. Then murders start happening and he isn’t completely convinced that he didn’t commit them.

June 2017 Review:
This is really my third read of this book. I first read it in 2004. Then I read it as part of a book club in 2010. I decided I needed to reread it before I watched the new television series since I only had a vague recollection of what happened.

I still love all the stories of the old gods coming to America. That is only in the first part of the book when Shadow and Wednesday are on a road trip to try to convince the old gods tha June 2017 Review:
This is really my third read of this book. I first read it in 2004. Then I read it as part of a book club in 2010. I decided I needed to reread it before I watched the new television series since I only had a vague recollection of what happened.

I still love all the stories of the old gods coming to America. That is only in the first part of the book when Shadow and Wednesday are on a road trip to try to convince the old gods that there is a war brewing and they need to be ready to fight. When the second part of the story switches to Shadow hiding in a small Wisconsin town, I was ready to be bored, especially since all the folklore stories disappeared, but soon I was caught up in that story too. About the time that was getting really good, everything changed course with Shadow in the middle of the two battling sides and the war about to begin.

I really had no idea where the story was going, even on a reread since I really only remembered the stories of how the old gods came to America and the vigil on the tree that is near the end. I loved being surprised while reading it. The imagery in dreams was fantastic. The con jobs were highly entertaining, especially the bank job one. When I thought the story was wrapping up, it wasn't quite finished. It could have easily had some loose ends, but it did all come together quite nicely in the end with a hint of more in the future. I'm looking forward to it.

September 2004 Review:
What happens to gods when the world forgets about them? This is an epic novel about a man named Shadow getting released from prison and having his world turned upside down on him. You slowly learn more about Shadow’s life as the novel goes on and he becomes Mr. Wednesday’s right-hand man while they travel around the U.S. and prepare for a war brewing between the old world gods and the new world gods.
