Oof. A slog. Beautifully written, and the author masterfully captures dementia. But the actual plot and the mystery move like molasses. In the end my heart aches, but there was about 150 pages in which I really didn't care.

Not as good as number one. (Number two was also not as good--such is the case of so many series.) Closure was achieved, but the ending was 1) a cop out to the overall story and 2) so far beyond necessary or believable (it's sci-fi and I STILL couldn' ...more

This was a very good book. Dense and lengthy--it took me considerably longer to read than I expected (about 16-20 hours of total reading time, including notes). Each chapter was a thoughtful investigation into a case study of prediction and how peopl ...more

I'm such a target audience for this (degree in Russian, love YA, love female-driven narratives, love magical realism/sci-fi etc). And yet it was a slog and I almost didn't finish. The Erg character and the Erg-Vassa relationship were insufferable (bo ...more

The writing was witty and fast-paced, but the main character was an entitled, insensitive jerk. Minimal self-awareness, and what he had was to admit he didn't care about others. It was a slog to get through, and his happy ending was undeserved. If th ...more

Delightful mystery, written for the youth audience. I found the clues very easy to interpret early on, so I feel like I was just waiting for the climax for half the book, even though I knew there would be a twist in the end. A satisfying read. I will ...more

Joe Dunthorne
“I don't know if I've come of age, but I'm certainly older now. I feel shrunken, as if there's a tiny ancient Oliver Tate inside me operating the levers of a life-size Oliver-shaped shell. A shell on which a decrepit picture show replays the same handful of images. Every night I come to the same place and wait till the sky catches up with my mood. The pattern is set. This is, no doubt, the end.”

“I bought a packet of Trojan® Ultra Pleasure Extra Sensitive condoms: ‘No. 1 in AMERICA’. They smell nothing like a positive first sexual experience.”

Louise Erdrich
“Life will break you. Nobody can protect you from that, and living alone won't either, for solitude will also break you with its yearning. You have to love. You have to feel. It is the reason you are here on earth. You are here to risk your heart. You are here to be swallowed up. And when it happens that you are broken, or betrayed, or left, or hurt, or death brushes near, let yourself sit by an apple tree and listen to the apples falling all around you in heaps, wasting their sweetness. Tell yourself you tasted as many as you could.”
Louise Erdrich, The Painted Drum

Joe Dunthorne
“I took a photo of us, mid-embrace. When I am old and alone I will remember that I once held something truly beautiful.”
Joe Dunthorne, Submarine
