From the origins of the Great Replacement to the secret processing centers and midnight migrant flights everywhere from Westchester to Wichita, this book explains why immigration - illegal and, in many cases, by invitation - continues to transform our nation into something unrecognizable and dangerous, but also something planned.

He uses the word "coup" intentionally. The strategy of overwhelming a population with new immigrants is not a misguided policy of good intentions: it is a calculated overthrow of a country. Support for this coup comes from all sides of the political aisle. The only people who don't want it are the citizens, which is why they must be replaced.

From Castro's prisoners arriving on boats in 1980, an event I remember well and saw up close as many of them ended up in the Atlanta Federal Penitentiary where they rioted early and often, to Biden's welcome mat at the Rio Grande, what we have seen is a war on the sovereign, orchestrated from the inside while using those on the outside.

There is a spiritual evil here as well. Leaders are using compassion as a cudgel, taking Bible verses out of context to shame and silence anyone who raises objections. Then, when the newcomers commit violent crime or massive fraud, a rigged legal system sets them free while Americans suffer in bewilderment.

It's maddening, enraging, and, unfortunately, expected. My hope is that this can be reversed through the ballot box and the hard enforcement of existing laws. But my fear is that we are beyond that and this will be settled in the streets, with blood and sorrow and damage that lasts for generations. I hope I'm wrong.

Read this book and draw your own conclusions. At the very least, you will put it down more enlightened than you were before. ...more

Take the scene in "Life of Brian" when Michael Palin tells the gang that he wants to have babies and an incredulous John Cleese has to debate that men can't have babies. It was funny because it highlighted how ridiculous and delusional movements become.

Enter radio talk-show host Buck Sexton with his book "Manufacturing Delusion" which takes a deep dive into what causes this magical thinking and, more importantly, why it has been used to control people for millennia. Buck looks at everything from social isolation and the innate need for group acceptance to our current propaganda wars. From the French Revolution to the covid madness; from Pravda to the current lineup at CNN, Buck takes you on a journey of discovery into why certain people in your life live in Fantasyland and will do whatever it takes, including hurting you, to stay there.

The cool part is the research. Unlike some media personalities, Buck did his homework. This one is full of historical references and footnotes mixed in with Buck's own experience working at the CIA and the NYPD Intelligence Unit. He's not quite as funny as Ann Coulter when she was writing a book a year, but the research and citations are just as good.

It's a quick read - about 250 pages in hardcover, if you can find it, which leads to another important point. I went to my local Books-a-Million in the most conservative county in Georgia and saw it nowhere. I had to ask a sad, young clerk for help. She went to the back and found the only copy in the store. At the time it was No.4 on the Amazon bestseller list. That example proves much of Buck's thesis. When you hide information, when you control all narratives, it is easy to move populations.

Don't fall for it. Buy this book, read it, digest it, and avoid the delusional manipulation in your life. You will be happier and we will all be better for it. ...more

Still, he and the cult he created continue to fascinate, not because of the brutality - as ghastly as the acts were, there have been much worse in the last half century - but because of the weird, demonic hold Manson had on his followers, even after being locked away. Remember Squeaky Fromme trying to kill Gerald Ford?

Every detail, every second of those awful nights in 1969 have been analyzed and reported. Tarantino even twisted a new ending to the Mason saga in his "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" movie. For all but the most decrepit of Boomers the hippie movement is an odd blip in history, a curious mass psychosis that made people think orgies in the dirt were something other than ancient pagan rituals; that somehow made people believe, even to this day, that Woodstock was not a miserable, mud-soaked campout with boring and off-key music. Why on earth did we need another book on Manson?

Well, it turns out much of the narrative in the previous books was just plain wrong. Other parts were clearly manipulated. According to this book, Vincent Bugliosi, Manson prosecutor and author of "Helter Skelter" was one of the most corrupt and unstable men in Los Angeles. We also learn from author Tom O'Neill that the Manson Family should have been in jail for stealing cars weeks before the Tate/LaBianca murders. The fact that they were set free after a massive raid is one of many strange incidents O'Neill went to great lengths to cover. It's a fascinating read, even if the ending is unsatisfying.

And that is the book's biggest flaw and greatest gift. You think you are about to find some revelation about the Manson murders, some grand conspiracy that makes sense of the unexplainable. To some extent O'Neill gets there. It turns out copious amounts of LSD mixed with amphetamines, hypnotic repetition, and social isolation drive you more than a little crazy and can lead young adults to stab people in their homes and then play in their blood. But that's not new. What is new are the shady characters with pseudo-scientific interests who had weird relationships with Manson, and all the documents that mysteriously disappeared during O'Neill's reporting. Even with that, though, the mystery never gets solved.

A quarter of the way through, you realize that this isn't a book about Manson at all: it's a story of obsession and the slow-motion madness that engulfs a writer, a condition O'Neill still doesn't seem to recognize. His Manson story started out as a magazine assignment in 1999, one with a three-month deadline. O'Neill's book was published in 2019, 20 years later after he had missed so many deadlines that the magazine went out of business and his original book publisher canceled his contract and sued him for a hefty advance. If you're not a nonfiction writer, you can't fully understand how crazy that is. Missing deadlines sends most of us into sleepless fits of panic. In the 37 books I've written I had to request an extension of one month one time to clarify some facts. I felt like it was a moral failing, as if I had insulted my publisher, editor, agent, wife, children, and ancestors. I averaged about four hours of sleep a night until I finished and filed that manuscript. If you've worked in news, you know that deadlines are sacrosanct. Miss one or two and you will be doing something else soon.

But O'Neill ran down one rabbit hole after another, chasing threads that twisted and curled and ultimately just ended, frayed and flapping in the breeze. You're reading along thinking, surely this is the key, the connection that pulls it all together, but that turns out to be another dead end. All the stories are fascinating - the stuff about Jolly West and the CIA hypnosis and LSD experiments are a book unto themselves - but after a while you feel like one of Manson's groupies, winding along on a trip that seems cool and free until the soap runs out and you wake up in a cell, smelly and gross and wondering what you've done with your life.

O'Neill had to have felt that way many times as this story consumed him. How could he not? That the book exists at all is a miracle. But it is a cautionary tale. Not all obsessions end with you eating dust and dodging rats at the Spahn Movie Ranch. Some, in fact most in our business, end with you staring at a blinking cursor on a blank screen surrounded by thousands of pages of notes, alone with your fear and your deadline. That is what drives writers to drink, lust, lash out, and in some cases take their own lives.

O'Neill got through the other side with a book that is worth your time. Just don't expect a tidy bow at the end. Two decades of reporting leaves a bit of a mess. ...more
