Archduke Felix of Estarion, nominally ruler of a small principality within a larger empire, has been in reality a prisoner nearly his entire life, his every move dictated by the man who had been his regent. When he gets a rare opportunity to escape, he seizes it, even if it means offering himself as a political pawn to the formidable witch queen of neighboring Kitvaria. But through a series of misunderstandings, he finds himself hired as the librarian for her extensive collection of magical books instead, mistaken for a dark wizard and no one in his new home aware of his real identity.
Queen Saskia of Kitvaria is desperate to prevent her kingdom from being absorbed by the aggressive, expansionist nearby empire. She has built a magical barrier to protect the border but knows it won't be enough so she hires a wizard librarian to help her make sense of her late parents' library of magical tomes in the hopes that she will find a more permanent solution there. She doesn't expect the enigmatic wizard to be gentle, patient, and self-effacing instead of arrogant and full of himself the way most wizards in her experience are. She also has no idea he's actually the man she considers one of her greatest enemies.
Felix and Saskia's slow romance is so swoonworthy and I enjoyed every minute with them. Without knowing it, they have similar abuse in their backgrounds, she having endured her uncle murdering her parents and usurping her kingdom until she reclaimed it. They also have a great cast of characters around them, from Saskia's household staff to her fellow two Wicked Queens (as her closest allies have dubbed themselves).
Also, unless I'm misreading my relatively obscure fairy tale references, is this a gender-switched retelling of Donkeyskin? You can see Burgis setting up a maybe-retelling of the Snow Queen for book 3, so I'm curious if book 2 will also turn out to be a fairy tale retelling. If so, it's one of the ones that involves kidnapping. ...more "
