Ugh 2.5 / 5 .. so much potential and I absolutely LOVED the premise of this book and yet, this is exactly why I don't read much self-identified sci-fi.

This book becomes unbearably slow about half way through, couldn't an editor have done something a

"I started out really enjoying this book, but it lost me in the second half. I struggled to finish it. And ended up skipping a large section of the zoo happenings and just reading the final chapter to see what happened to the characters. I don't kn..." Read more of this review »

"There were a lot of ways this book could have gone wrong, but I did not expect it to be so boring."
Night of the Animals by Bill Broun
"Stopped around page 300. Good writing, interesting protagonist, well-realilzed future London, and a unique plot device that works better than it should (are the animals really speaking to Cuthbert or has his Flot additiction so destroyed his mind..." Read more of this review »

Emma Cline
“Poor Sasha. Poor girls. The world fattens them on the promise of live. How badly they need it, and how little most of them will ever get. The treacled pop songs, the dresses described in the catalogs with words like 'sunset' and 'Paris.' Then the dreams are taken away with such violent force; the hand wrenching the buttons of the jeans, nobody looking at the man shouting at his girlfriend on the bus”
Emma Cline, The Girls

Haruki Murakami
“On any given day, something can come along and steal our hearts. It may be any old thing: a rosebud, a lost cap, a favorite sweater from childhood, an old Gene Pitney record. A miscellany of trivia with no home to call their own. Lingering for two or three days, that something soon disappears, returning to the darkness. There are wells, deep wells, dug in our hearts. Birds fly over them."

-from "Pinball, 1973”
Haruki Murakami, Wind/Pinball: Two Novels

Kelsey Miller
“We don't get montages or grand finales. We just eat dinner and do the dishes, and absolutely no one's going to clap their hands about it.”
Kelsey Miller, Big Girl: How I Gave Up Dieting and Got a Life

Emma Cline
“That was part of being a girl--you were resigned to whatever feedback you'd get. If you got mad, you were crazy, and if you didn't react, you were a bitch. The only thing you could do was smile from the corner they'd backed you into. Implicate yourself in the joke even if the joke was always on you.”
Emma Cline, The Girls

Sally Mann
“I believe that photographs actually rob all of us of our memory.”
