Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut Jr.

My consistent complaint about Vonnegut is that is not a good writer (because he fails to write out his stories), and in Slaughterhouse-Five he agrees with me. This is a book about an event that Vonnegutt cannot manage (for seemingly legitimate reas ...more

Reaper's Eye
by Richard A. Knaak (Goodreads Author)

Ah, paycheck fiction.

Knaak, perhaps best know for his work in the Dragonlance and Dragonrealm settings, produces a story that doesn't really fit in with how Paizo developed Golarion. This reads as something more akin to the setting of The Janus Mak

Starship Troopers by Robert A. Heinlein

I wanted to enjoy this far more than I actually did.

Heinlein's philosophy can, perhaps, best be described as veteran worship without any attempt, beyond the idea that unless one is willing to put his or her life on the line to defend society, person

The Force Awakens by Alan Dean Foster

I don't know if Foster is a terrible writer. From what I have read of adaptations from adaptations from film scripts, it is not as easy a task as it would seem to be. I do know that this effort makes the film look like a masterpiece.

Cat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut Jr.

To Vonnegut's credit, this is almost arranged like a coherent story. It just isn't much of a story, and the commentary it provides is vapid.

I have enjoyed Vonnegut's non-fiction (what little I have read), but I have long been stymied (since 1990 when

How to Fight Presidents by Daniel O'Brien

I enjoy Daniel O'Brien in video format. Well, not when he is praising "White Men Can't Jump" as film perfection (because that is an indefensible position), but for the most part. I didn't much enjoy this book.

The problem, other than that humor is sub

On Tyranny by Timothy Snyder

There is not much substance to this thin offering. While it may have been a salve to the mind of Snyder to get it all down on paper (and a friendly means of rallying like-minded souls together in defense of rationality), it does little to advance the ...more

Nothing's Sacred by Lewis Black

It didn't surprise me that Black would not be funny on the page. His humor relies much more on presentation than content, even when he isn't pretending to be a less thoughtful version of George Carlin. Where this book truly fails is that it does noth ...more
