“From golden showers of the ancient skies,
On the first day, and the eternal snow of stars,
You once unfastened giant calyxes
For the young earth still innocent of scars:

Young gladioli with the necks of swans,
Laurels divine, of exiled souls the dream,
Vermilion as the modesty of dawns
Trod by the footsteps of the seraphim;

The hyacinth, the myrtle gleaming bright,
And, like the flesh of woman, the cruel rose,
Hérodiade blooming in the garden light,
She that from wild and radiant blood arose!

And made the sobbing whiteness of the lily
That skims a sea of sighs, and as it wends
Through the blue incense of horizons, palely
Toward the weeping moon in dreams ascends!

Hosanna on the lute and in the censers,
Lady, and of our purgatorial groves!
Through heavenly evenings let the echoes answer,
Sparkling haloes, glances of rapturous love!

Mother, who in your strong and righteous bosom,
Formed calyxes balancing the future flask,
Capacious flowers with the deadly balsam
For the weary poet withering on the husk.”
Stéphane Mallarmé

Still one of my favorite books. Dark, poetic language that I shall remember for a long time. This is a tale all girls should read. Tanith was a great feminist without trying. NO preaching. It's all very organic and fluid.

REREAD June 2019

Although many readers like Cruel Beauty more than Crimson Bound, I am not one of them. I've read Cruel Beauty several times, but I do not like it as much as I do this lovely pastoral fantasy that is full of so much depth and complexit

Federico García Lorca
“Today in my heart
a vague trembling of stars,
but my way is lost
in the soul of the mist.
Light lops my wings.”
Federico García Lorca, The Selected Poems

Taylor Jenkins Reid
“Passion's fire. And fire is great, man. But we're made of water. Water is how we keep living. Water is what we need to survive.”
Taylor Jenkins Reid, Daisy Jones & The Six

“Your unhappiness cannot be blamed on your past or your environment. And it isn’t that you lack competence. You just lack courage. One might say you are lacking in the courage to be happy.”
Ichiro Kishimi, The Courage To Be Disliked: How to free yourself, change your life and achieve real happiness

Charles Baudelaire
“I worship you like night's pavilion,
O vase of sadness, o great silent one,
And love you more since you escape from me,
And since you seem, my night's sublimity,
To mock me and increase the leagues that lie
Between my arms and blue immensity.

I move to the attack, besiege, assail,
Like eager worms after a funeral.
I even love, o beast implacable,
The coldness which makes you more beautiful.”
Charles Baudelaire
