What? I have a decent vocabulary, but there are at least seven words in this paragraph that I don’t know the meaning of. I am sure the author was trying to make the setting more memorable, but this is just too much. I gave up.

“But food gulped down is no food at all; it’s wasted; it gives you no feeling of fullness.”
Alexander Solschenizyn, One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich

Dan Gemeinhart
“And below them, a hungry menace knocked at an ancient door. And even then, surrounded by friendly faces, his dark fears whispered at him, and the flickering warmth of their candles' light seemed terribly small and fragile.”
Dan Gemeinhart, Scar Island

Jacqueline Woodson
“I am in love with everything around me,
the dotted white lines moving
across my teacher's blackboard, the smell of chalk, the flag jutting out from the wall and slowly swaying above.
There is nothing more beautiful that P.S. 106.
Nothing more perfect than my first-grade classroom.
No one more kind than Ms. Feilder, who meets me at the door each morning,
takes my hand from my sister's, smiles down and says,
Now that Jacqueline is here, the day can begin.
And I believe her.
Yes, I truly believe her.”
Jacqueline Woodson, Brown Girl Dreaming

Jacqueline Woodson
Before, you used to hear the word immigration and it sounded like everything you ever believed in. It sounded like feliz cumpleaños and merry Christmas and welcome home. But now you hear it and you get scared because it sounds like a word that makes you want to disappear. It sounds like someone getting stolen away from you.
Jacqueline Woodson, Harbor Me

Jacqueline Woodson
“I didn't know it would be people you barely knew becoming friends that harbored you. And dreams you didn't even know you had - coming true. I didn't know it would be superpowers rising up out of tragedies, and perfect moments in a nearly empty classroom.”
Jacqueline Woodson, Harbor Me
