There is a coldness to this book I did not like. It lacks the warmth of say James Herriot's books.
Within the first 25 pages there was already a lot of killing. Dalmation puppies killed because they were deaf (and they called it euthanize which is ju

Loved most of this book. I did want some things to be different...but people are different.
I did think the end of a bit abrupt and not as elegant as it could have been.
I listed to this book on CD.

"I know you are thinking, is there a book you don't like, Laura? Here's the deal. If I don't like a book I can barely read it, much less finish it. So if I do read it-I like it, in varying degrees, but I like it. So tonight I read the Magician's As..." Read more of this review »

Amazing. I actually listened to this book on a CD and enjoyed the philosophizing tremendously. Challenging what I may think of the world.
And though I am no genius I related to both Paloma and Renee in different aspects.
The ending was not what I woul

I loved this book. Others have commented that Noelle seemed immature but are they judging from an older age? Or from a entirely different upbringing? Or personality type?
And each of us is in a different place and 'matures' differently. Another commen

My Year with Eleanor by Noelle Hancock
"This is another of those "do-something-for-a-year-and-write-about-it" books, which is so trendy, but I thought this one was well-written. After losing her blogging job, Noelle becomes inspired by an Eleanor Roosevelt quote about fear and decides t..." Read more of this review »

Mark Twain
“The so-called Christian nations are the most enlightened and progressive ... but in spite of their religion, not because of it. The Church has opposed every innovation and discovery from the day of Galileo down to our own time, when the use of anesthetic in childbirth was regarded as a sin because it avoided the biblical curse pronounced against Eve. And every step in astronomy and geology ever taken has been opposed by bigotry and superstition. The Greeks surpassed us in artistic culture and in architecture five hundred years before Christian religion was born.”

“If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous he will not bite you. This is the principal difference between a dog and man.”

“Man is a Religious Animal. He is the only Religious Animal. He is the only animal that has the True Religion--several of them. He is the only animal that loves his neighbor as himself and cuts his throat if his theology isn't straight. He has made a graveyard of the globe in trying his honest best to smooth his brother's path to happiness and heaven....The higher animals have no religion. And we are told that they are going to be left out in the Hereafter. I wonder why? It seems questionable taste.”

Mark Twain
“In religion and politics people’s beliefs and convictions are in almost every case gotten at second-hand, and without examination, from authorities who have not themselves examined the questions at issue but have taken them at second-hand from other non-examiners, whose opinions about them were not worth a brass farthing.”

“The human race is a race of cowards; and I am not only marching in that procession but carrying a banner.”
