Wow! I loved this! A hard read but very dense, multi-layered and rewarding. If I was stranded on a desert island with only 3 books - this would be one of them. Worth re-reading multiple times!

Excellent! This guy really knows how to write. I was totally immersed in this tale of two Australian sisters who are both nurses in WWI. Great characters, a great plot, and very evocative writing of wartime, nursing, and relationships. Recommended! I ...more

The story of a young Japanese girl who develops leprosy. At age 16 she is exiled to an island with others like her. Great writing and characters. Spare and affecting. Recommended!

I have been on a war nurse kick (I know, I know!) but this entry disappointed me. The characters didn't come to life and I found I really didn't care that much about what happened to them.
