"Btw: Is there some kind of similar fight going on in the rest of the world, too? Or is is purely a US-American thing because these 5 % of the world population are the only ones that count for God and his adversary? :-)" Jul 19, 2018 12:49AM

"Reason: ****
Powell and Donovan in Space. I don't know if we are supposed to take this one seriously, because there are some flaws in there, and if one really stops to think about it, one might find more of them. For example: If Cutie, the robot, does not believe the Earth exists, then he does not act according to the First Law when he breaks the Second Law and disobeys orders.
Anyway, very amusing and well written."

"I am tempted to say that the stories in this book seem a bit formulaic, but in this case this is not a bad thing. Not a particularly good one, either, but it does not really matter. I can enjoy every story nevertheless, probably because I do not read the book in one go, but one story every few weeks." Jun 27, 2018 01:37AM

Entertaining, nice twists. But Pendergast does not seem as over the top as in prior books (and I like him over the top), and I found it a little disturbing that D'Agosta of all people found it so impossible that something supernatural was going on. ( ...more

Becky Chambers does not seem to like conflicts. That may be an admirable quality in a person you want to get along with. As she now is a writer, this trait somewhat limits her in her work. In the beginning, this novel stirred up great expectations wi ...more

Oh boy.
Ok, first of all, this is basically one of those action movies for which, in order to enjoy them, you have to deposit you brain at the entrance of the cinema.
There is, however, one rather obvious problem: This is not really a movie. It

You know what!? Fuck this! Fuck this airlock, fuck that Hab, and fuck this whole planet!
Seriously, this is it! I've had it! I've got a few minutes before I run out of air and I'll be damned if I spend them playing Mars's little game. I'm so god damned sick of it I could puke!
All I have to do is sit here. The air will leak out and I'll die.
I'll be done. No more getting my hopes up, no more self-delusion, and no more problem-solving. I've fucking had it!

Sigh...okay. I've had my tantrum and now I have to figure out how to stay alive.”
Andy Weir, The Martian

“The world breaks everyone, and afterward, many are strong at the broken places.”

“... I should wish to add, as a tribute to the great merits of your lordship's cellar, that, although I was obliged to drink a somewhat large quantity both of the Cockburn '68 and the 1800 Napoleon I feel no headache or other ill effects this morning.

Trusting that your lordship is deriving real benefit from the country air, and that the little information I have been able to obtain will prove satisfactory, I remain,

With respectful duty to all the family, their ladyships,

Obediently yours,

"Y'know," said Lord Peter thoughtfully to himself, "I sometimes think Mervyn Bunter's pullin' my leg.”

“We went into Bennie`s, where Ratso bought all three newspapers: the Post, which I always read and Ratso hated, The New York Times, which Ratso loved and I didn't believe in, and the Daily News, which we both read to see if the Russians were attacking the Alamo yet.”
