Iqraa formed in 2011 out of a concern around a lack of readership of Arabic literature. In the multi-cultural community of the UAE, the Arabic language is increasingly underused and Arabic readership is decreasing. Iqraa's vision is to promote the use of the Arabic language through readings and discussions of contemporary Arabic literature. We chose to read the books shortlisted for the International Prize for Arabic Fiction (IPAF) as it provides a select and diverse group of Arabic fiction books that are chosen by a team of respected judging panel with the support of the Booker Prize Foundation in London and supported by the Emirates Foundation, a UAE based charity.
