Treated myself to this over the holidays and enjoyed it thoroughly. Blown away by how this story started with a fascination for churches, and how the events of the time are told through such an absorbing story spanning multiple generations. Can't wai ...more

What an amazingly written account of an inspiringly badass life! Four stars only because it felt a little clunky and hard to get back to, somewhere in the middle. Otherwise, absolutely no complaints from me.
Creative Conformity by Elizabeth M. Bucar
"This book contains excellent material and very respectful to its subjects, but is written in an extremely academic style that makes it borderline unreadable. Great source, but don't try to read it cover-to-cover unless you're realllllly into this..." Read more of this review »

Nick Hornby
“People worry about kids playing with guns, and teenagers watching violent videos; we are scared that some sort of culture of violence will take them over. Nobody worries about kids listening to thousands - literally thousands - of songs about broken hearts and rejection and pain and misery and loss.”
Nick Hornby, High Fidelity

Kahlil Gibran
“Let there be spaces in your togetherness, And let the winds of the heavens dance between you. Love one another but make not a bond of love: Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls. Fill each other's cup but drink not from one cup. Give one another of your bread but eat not from the same loaf. Sing and dance together and be joyous, but let each one of you be alone, Even as the strings of a lute are alone though they quiver with the same music. Give your hearts, but not into each other's keeping. For only the hand of Life can contain your hearts. And stand together, yet not too near together: For the pillars of the temple stand apart, And the oak tree and the cypress grow not in each other's shadow.”
Kahlil Gibran, The Prophet
