I read this book because I loved the movie and hoped it would help clear some questions up. The book gives a little more insight to the movie, but the two differ, as often happens from book to screen. Still a good read though.

Really great social narrative of sorts of life in Afghanistan. Especially revealing of the lives of women. Comments on life before, during, and after the Taliban.

A.A. Milne
“It is more fun to talk with someone who doesn't use long, difficult words but rather short, easy words like "What about lunch?”
A. A. Milne, Winnie-the-Pooh

George Herbert
“The best mirror is an old friend.”
George Herbert

Henri J.M. Nouwen
“When we honestly ask ourselves which person in our lives mean the most to us, we often find that it is those who, instead of giving advice, solutions, or cures, have chosen rather to share our pain and touch our wounds with a warm and tender hand. The friend who can be silent with us in a moment of despair or confusion, who can stay with us in an hour of grief and bereavement, who can tolerate not knowing, not curing, not healing and face with us the reality of our powerlessness, that is a friend who cares.”
Henri Nouwen, Out of Solitude: Three Meditations on the Christian Life

Aristotle
“Wishing to be friends is quick work, but friendship is a slow ripening fruit.”
Aristotle

C.S. Lewis
“Friendship is unnecessary, like philosophy, like art.... It has no survival value; rather it is one of those things which give value to survival.”
C.S. Lewis, The Four Loves
