He doesn’t lift his eyes. “There are some things I want to show you.” This was hands down my favorite scene to write: the scene where Four takes Tris into his fear landscape and she learns who he really is. It had all the things I like to write most: some action, some “romantic tension build up” moments, some surreal environments, and some real emotion. And for all Tobias’s future agonizing over whether he really belongs in Dauntless or if he just chose it to escape Abnegation, for me, this is what proves that Dauntless is where he belongs. Show spoiler That is death—shifting from “is” to “was.” Oof—this is one of the parts of the book that doesn’t age so well, for me. Not this quote, which is simple and true, but the way Al’s death is handled and the way Tris thinks of it. She calls Al a coward, which is later reinforced by Tobias—definitely not the mindset I have about people who die by suicide now. You always write from the place where you are, for better or worse, and that can be hard—because the words are stuck that way, they don’t change, and you realize the harm they might still do in the world.
