Traitor to the Throne by Alwyn Hamilton
"Probably 3.5 stars, like Rebel of the Sands. Perhaps I was spoiled by the action-packed start to the first book, I thought this one was very slow to get started; however, the palace politics were well done, with significant intrigue. Amani was mor..." Read more of this review »

In which we are confirmed in the belief that Scarlett will never get to have the nice things. For values of things = a romantic relationship.

Also in which an author's note added even more emotional punch to a twist-in-the-tail that I never saw comin

I wasn't nearly as taken with this as I expected to be, and I'm still not quite sure why. Mostly it was the magical realism, which just didn't work with the story for me, especially as it was part of the running, which became the only hope

Jane Gardam
“The astounding thing about Paula is that she looks like Tess of the D´Urbervilles, and she sounds like Tess of the D´Urbervilles, and she thinks like Tess of the D´Urbervilles and yet she is so different from Tess of the D´Urbervilles. I expect she comes from a different part of Dorset.”
Jane Gardam, Bilgewater

C.E. Murphy
“In Ireland, you go to someone's house, and she asks you if you want a cup of tea. You say no, thank you, you're really just fine. She asks if you're sure. You say of course you're sure, really, you don't need a thing. Except they pronounce it ting. You don't need a ting. Well, she says then, I was going to get myself some anyway, so it would be no trouble. Ah, you say, well, if you were going to get yourself some, I wouldn't mind a spot of tea, at that, so long as it's no trouble and I can give you a hand in the kitchen. Then you go through the whole thing all over again until you both end up in the kitchen drinking tea and chatting.

In America, someone asks you if you want a cup of tea, you say no, and then you don't get any damned tea.

I liked the Irish way better.”
C.E. Murphy, Urban Shaman

Jane Austen
“It is only a novel... or, in short, only some work in which the greatest powers of the mind are displayed, in which the most thorough knowledge of human nature, the happiest delineation of its varieties, the liveliest effusions of wit and humour, are conveyed to the world in the best-chosen language”
Jane Austen, Northanger Abbey

Megan Whalen Turner
“No 'Glory shall be your reward' for me. Oh, no, for me, it is, 'Stop whining' and 'Go to bed'.”
Megan Whalen Turner, The King of Attolia

Jane Austen
“The person, be it gentleman or lady, who has not pleasure in a good novel, must be intolerably stupid.”
Jane Austen, Northanger Abbey
