"I picked up momentum there for a while and managed about 35 pages- however, other stuff is so much more accessible- I love Mitchell's use of language, and the deepening weave of character, incident and plot, but I can't get traction... Frustrating. Am now in my third year of reading this, and was really trying to get through it before Bone Clocks emerges. It's obviously a book that won't be hurried!" Aug 20, 2014 02:41PM

"I've gotten to the bit where the protagonist is going to go and try to change his school-mate's life and I am literally too afraid to read on, so vivid is the set-up. I know this makes me a thundering great wuss. This is a very atmospheric and well crafted piece of story telling, almost too credible for comfort." Jul 06, 2012 09:27AM

I should have read this yonks ago.

However, my life circumstances have changed, and I'm now in a moment where I can take significantly more from this text than I could have fifteen years ago.

Loved this. Detailed, insightful, very good at asking precisely how the consensus account the War came into place while at the same time showing the real intricacy behind the scenes. The emerging discussion of the balance of power within and between ...more

Extremely readable and very droll account of two men's attempt to reconnect with their inner weekend-warrior. Don't be put off by the limited dramatist personae, there are plenty of cameo appearances, hopefully by individuals whose names were changed ...more

Niven is an excellent raconteur and keeps up the pace. Given his war-time service and Hollywood career, you'd think that these would be the set pieces, but his schooldays are excellently handled and family life is given an honest yet sympathetic trea ...more

Very detailed summary of one of the lesser known yet pivotal moments of WW2. The interpersonal elements which contrived to hamper both sides conduct during the battle are well explored. Beevor strikes his customary balance between the frontline and t ...more

To get a flavour of what this book holds, imagine George Eliot on crystal meth. I enjoyed Tinker T, and am making headway into Smiley's People, but golly, the mid-point of the rebranded trilogy is a shambles. For work reasons I found myself re-visiti ...more
