Never-Ending Book Quiz
Story opener from Vance Bourjaily:
In August, 1945, in a small southern town which still cannot be named, a First Lieutenant Allerd Pennington, a young scientist, disappeared from an inconspicuous army installation. This post, even now, is represented to the local public as a plant for overhauling aircraft instruments. Penninston's disappearance, which took place on the same day that the explosion of the first atomic bomb at Hiroshima was announced, caused instant alarm at very high levels. Within minutes of the first report, a federal investigation was begun; operatives, borrowing the uniforms of military policemen, used for a cover-story the army's purported treatment of the matter as a routine AWOL case.
