Born Hillsboro, West Virginia. Parents were Absalom and Virginia, both of whom were missionaries. Raised bilingual, in China. Returned to the U.S. to attend school and became a missionary herself. Returned to China. Married twice, divorced once. Political issues and violence in China forced her to leave permanently. Her second husband was her publisher. Wrote biographies, non-fiction, stories, and many novels about China (sometimes under the pseudonym John Sedges), one of which was the bestselling American novel in 1931-32. Won the Pulitzer Prize and the Nobel Prize; was the first American woman to win the Nobel for Literature. Denounced in China because of her works. Died of lung cancer and was buried in Perkasie, Pennsylvania; her grave is marked by a tombstone of her own design, with Chinese characters that represent her name, using her maiden name and not the name under which she wrote.
